{"id":481,"date":"2012-06-27T13:56:34","date_gmt":"2012-06-27T18:56:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.iqaccountingsolutions.com\/blog\/?p=481"},"modified":"2012-09-24T14:21:05","modified_gmt":"2012-09-24T19:21:05","slug":"centering-text-across-multiple-columns-in-excel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iqaccountingsolutions.com\/blog\/centering-text-across-multiple-columns-in-excel\/","title":{"rendered":"Centering Text Across Multiple Columns in Excel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Almost every Excel user knows how to center the contents of a cell using the button on the toolbar.\u00a0 But that only lets you center within a cell.\u00a0 What if you want to center a heading above a table that is several columns wide?\u00a0 That&#8217;s where a formatting option called &#8220;Center Across Selection&#8221; comes in.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you have 4 columns of data in Excel, there is no center column so you can&#8217;t use it to center your heading.\u00a0 Instead, enter your text at the top of the first column.\u00a0 Then highlight that cell and the next 3 cells to the right so you have highlighted all 4 cells at the top of your table.\u00a0 Now right-click in the highlighted area and choose<em> Format Cells<\/em> from the menu.\u00a0 On the <em>Alignment <\/em>tab of the formatting window open the dropdown list for <em>horizontal <\/em>text alignment and choose <em>Center Across Selection<\/em>.\u00a0 Click OK to close the window.\u00a0 The text you entered in the first column will now be centered above all four columns.<\/p>\n<p>Another option would be to use the <em>Merge &amp; Center<\/em> button that is in the <em>Alignment <\/em>section of the <em>Home <\/em>ribbon of Excel 2007 and later, or on the formatting toolbar in Excel 2003 or older.\u00a0 You would still highlight the cells you want to center across, then just click the <em>Merge &amp; Center<\/em> button.<\/p>\n<p>Merging is the difference between the two methods.\u00a0 Merge &amp; Center merges the highlighted cells so they behave as one cell.\u00a0 Center Across Selection centers the text but does not merge the cells, allowing you to apply other formatting to or enter other text in the other cells in the range.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Centering text across multiple columns in Excel is easy with this quick formatting tip.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[5],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.iqaccountingsolutions.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/481"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.iqaccountingsolutions.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.iqaccountingsolutions.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.iqaccountingsolutions.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.iqaccountingsolutions.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=481"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/www.iqaccountingsolutions.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/481\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":631,"href":"https:\/\/www.iqaccountingsolutions.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/481\/revisions\/631"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.iqaccountingsolutions.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=481"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.iqaccountingsolutions.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=481"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.iqaccountingsolutions.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=481"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
