{"id":156,"date":"2010-08-26T16:00:47","date_gmt":"2010-08-26T21:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.iqaccountingsolutions.com\/blog\/?p=156"},"modified":"2012-09-24T14:12:34","modified_gmt":"2012-09-24T19:12:34","slug":"the-print-screen-button","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iqaccountingsolutions.com\/blog\/the-print-screen-button\/","title":{"rendered":"THE PRINT SCREEN BUTTON"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the early days of personal computers, the Print Screen button on your keyboard (above the arrow keys and to the left of the number pad for those of you who have never bothered looking at the keys you don&#8217;t use) would actually print what was on your screen.\u00a0 But everyone who has tried it knows that in Windows, it doesn&#8217;t print anything.\u00a0 So what does it do?\u00a0 It takes a &#8220;snapshot&#8221; of whatever is on your screen.\u00a0 Then you can paste that snapshot into a document. So if you are developing procedures or documenting an error, you can paste a picture of your screen into your document or email instead of just describing what it looks like.\u00a0 Pasting a screen shot is just like pasting anything else. In most programs that means choosing <em>Paste<\/em> from the <em>Edit<\/em> menu, right-click &amp; <em>Paste<\/em> or <em>Ctrl+V<\/em> would all work.<\/p>\n<p>There are two basic options for using this feature.\u00a0 (1) As I said before, pressing <em>Print Screen<\/em> will capture an image of your whole screen.\u00a0 Or (2) you can use <em>Alt+Print Screen<\/em> to capture just the current window.\u00a0 In many situations that is more helpful than capturing your entire screen.<\/p>\n<p>What if you want an image of less than a whole window?\u00a0 Then you have to either crop the image down to just the part you want using some other software, or buy a specialized screen capture program, which can give you many options.\u00a0 Some are even available for free.<\/p>\n<p>One other related feature in Windows allows you to capture just the text from an error screen.\u00a0 Make sure the error message is the active window, then press <em>Ctrl+C<\/em> (the standard copy shortcut in Windows).\u00a0 When you paste that, instead of getting a picture of the error message, you will get the actual text, without any of the graphics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What good is a &#8220;Print Screen&#8221; button that doesn&#8217;t print your screen?
